My name is Robin Hillis and I am 38 years old. From a very young age, I remember being athletic and involved in everything from tap and jazz to gymnastics and track and field. This was all before I started school. Once in school, I joined every athletic team I could. My mom and dad also put me in piano lessons at age 6. I went all the way to grade 8 royal conservatory and still play to this day! This is something I like to tell people because it is a side most people don’t know about me.
So back to bodybuilding! When I was in grade 12, I had an assignment due in health class. I was to write about an athlete I admired or wished I could be like. I was looking through a magazine and found an article on Cory Everson. I was so amazed at her shape, muscularity and her beautiful lines. I completed my project on her and joined a gym 2 weeks after graduating grade 12!
My body responded very well to weight training and I started to develop shoulders within weeks! I was hooked. I loved the feel of the pump. I especially loved how my body was responding to the training. I could see weekly changes.
In 1992, I entered my first bodybuilding show in Hamilton known then as the McKenzie Challenge. I placed 2nd and loved being on stage! I didn’t compete again until 2003, after I started a family. I decided to ease back into it and wanted to try Musclemania. It wasn’t for me, so I went back to the Ontario Physique Association and placed 3rd at my level 1.
2004, I placed 1st and overall at my level 2 and 2 weeks later was on stage competing at my first Provincial show. I won the heavyweight title! After many talks with my trainer, we decided to wait a year to compete at the Nationals and bring my legs up a bit more. So in 2005, I headed to Montreal, Quebec and was on stage at the Nationals. No matter, the outcome, I had surpassed my goals and was proud of my personal accomplishments! I didn’t place in the top 5, but had fun and made some amazing friends that I still keep in touch with!
I have taken the last few years off from competing, but am getting the itch to go back. I have to requalify at the provincial level, but have maintained most of my size and shape. I still train everyday and do my cardio! So let’s hope I see you soon on stage at the Ontarios!!!
