Biography:
Theresa was born and raised in Miami, Florida. A foster child for the first 10 years of her life, suffering much abuse in a system that did not care, Theresa rose above her circumstances to be extremely successful. Throughout her life, she has had a very competitive spirit. Her greatest accomplishments are her two daughters: Lena, Lauren and her new granddaughter, Haylah Grace.
She participated in a couple of bodybuilding competitions in the 1980’s, winning best poser and first place. After raising her girls, she had the desire to get back into some kind of competition. Always in a gym, a trainer suggested she participate in fitness. Not knowing what it was, she and her husband went to view it. She was hooked.
She has since participated in four competitions: one local, one state, and two national, culminating in a 5th place finish in the NPC Nationals in her class. Theresa finished 3rd in her routine but under the new NPC rules, the judges found her to be “too” muscular for fitness. She has been blessed with wonderful genetics, a highly competitive spirit and an unbelievable work ethic. The body she came with was the body she gets naturally, so what to do? The judges recommended and with the encouragement of her husband, Theresa chose to pursue bodybuilding.
She has had success right from the beginning, finishing first as a heavyweight at the Pittsburgh NPC Bodybuilding Championship, which qualified her for national-level competition. Her first national show was the NPC Junior Nationals, in Chicago, Illinois, where she finished first again in the Light Heavyweight Division. With the opportunity to represent the United States in the World Championships, Theresa competed at the Team Universe. She was disappointed missing first place by only one point to the eventual overall winner, who went to Spain finishing 4th in the World. Her dissatisfaction with this finish did not deter Theresa, it only served to motivate her.
She had qualified to enter the NPC Nationals for the second year in a row, only this time in bodybuilding. This set the stage for a possible history making event. She finished fifth as heavyweight in her first Bodybuilding Nationals out of 25 girls. By this finish, Theresa became the first woman in history to finish in the Top 5 at The Nationals in fitness and bodybuilding in back-to-back years. Since these two sports require different training regimens, this is an awesome accomplishment.
Theresa has become an inspiration to many women who see this grandmother able to perform and look this good. This has served as Theresa’s greatest inspiration as well. No longer for only the contest, she now competes to inspire other women and to leave a legacy behind for her grandchild and her children; and to be the best that she can be. Her future goals are to achieve Ms. Olympia and write a book about her life story.
